David Morgan is a Professor of Religious Studies and Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He currently chairs the Department of Religious Studies (2023–present) and has previously held the position from 2013–2019. His academic career began at Duke in 2008 after earning a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago (1990).

Research focuses on material religion, visual culture, and the intersection of images with religious practice. Key interests include the role of images in enchantment, materiality in religious studies, and the history of religious artifacts.
