Maynard's research focuses on organic structure, properties, and the isolation and identification of natural products. His work includes studies on mercury(II)-mediated hydrolysis reactions, vitamin D analogues, and insecticidal compounds from avocado oil. He has contributed to chemical education through innovative laboratory equipment designs such as microscale rotary evaporators and audio conductivity devices.
His teaching interests span general chemistry, organic chemistry, and STEM training, covering courses like CHEM 1000, CHEM 2100, and CHEM 5500. His publications highlight interdisciplinary applications of chemistry in education, agriculture, and environmental science.
Maynard co-founded the CNS Science Success Center, which emphasizes reducing achievement gaps through educational interventions like lesson study processes (Teele et al., 2015).
