Professor David Mattingly is a Professor of Roman Archaeology at the University of Leicester, affiliated with the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. He holds a BA in History and a PhD in Roman Archaeology from the University of Manchester. Following post-doctoral work at the Institute of Archaeology Oxford, he held positions at the University of Michigan before joining Leicester in 1991. He was promoted to Reader (1995) and Professor (1998).
His career includes administrative roles such as College Director of Research (2009–2012) and Head of School (2015–2019). He contributed to the AHRC Midlands4Cities doctoral consortium and served on national research assessment panels (RAE2008, REF2014, REF2021), chairing the latter. His honors include Fellowship of the British Academy (2003) and membership in Academia Europaea (2013).
