Prof. David M. Berry is the Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the School of Media, Arts and Humanities. He specializes in critical digital humanities, critical theory, and the philosophy of technology, particularly focusing on algorithms, AI ethics, and the historical and philosophical foundations of universities. His research includes the ELIZA Archaeology Project, which rediscovered the source code of the first chatbot, and explores computational capitalism, explainability, and the transformation of academic institutions.
Research Interests: Critical Digital Humanities, Critical Theory, Media Theory, Philosophy of Technology, Algorithms, Software Studies, AI Ethics, University Philosophy, Explainability and Interpretability.
