David Lucas is a Lecturer in the Department of English at Case Western Reserve University. Born and raised in Cleveland, he holds degrees from John Carroll University (BA, 2002), University of Virginia (MFA, 2004), and University of Michigan (PhD, 2014). He teaches creative writing and coordinates the Medical Humanities program at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.
His research focuses on contemporary poetry, literary composition, and interdisciplinary approaches to medical education. Lucas co-founded Cleveland Book Week and Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery, and teaches at multiple writing workshops.
His honors include the Ohioana Book Award for Poetry for his collection Weather (2011), and recognition by Rita Dove as one of thirteen 'young poets to watch.' He served as Poet Laureate of Ohio (2018).
