David Levy

David Levy is a Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. He joined the department in 2004 and previously taught in London, with prior professional experience in computer science. His research focuses on moral understanding, particularly through moral experiences and the good, alongside interests in almost all areas of philosophy history. Notable influences include Simone Weil, Stanley Cavell, and Peter Winch.

Teaching areas include Wittgenstein, moral understanding, Simone Weil, and political philosophy. He supervises PhD students across disciplines (current students: Martin Kelly in Law and Bethany Parsons in History) and welcomes research proposals in Moral Philosophy, Political Philosophy, and related areas. Office hours are Tuesday 3-4pm and 4:05-5:05pm.

Research interests span Moral Philosophy, Wittgenstein studies, Plato, Kant, phenomenology, and applied ethics. He emphasizes close supervision in postgraduate/undergraduate work and maintains an active engagement with philosophical discourse.
