David Karig

David Karig is an Associate Professor at Clemson University in the Department of Electrical Engineering within the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. He leads the Synthetic Biology and Microbiome Engineering Laboratory, conducting research across multiple biological scales.

Research Interests:

• Subcellular: Cell-free synthetic biology, synthetic gene networks, biosensors, and fieldable protein production systems
• Multicellular: Cell population engineering through quorum sensing, pattern formation, and biofilm development
• Multi-species: Microbiome structure analysis and engineering applications including skin microbiome research

His work combines synthetic biology tools with microbiome studies, focusing on both fundamental principles and applied engineering solutions. Current projects emphasize robust field applications and biomaterial fabrication.
