About
David Johnstone is a Knowledge Exchange Fellow in Geothermal Energy and Hydrogen Storage within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on constructing a 3D geological model of the subsurface in Greater Manchester and the Cheshire Basin to address climate targets through renewable energy solutions and carbon sequestration.
- Research Interests: Geothermal energy decarbonization, Hydrogen storage in geological formations, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) feasibility, Subsurface mapping, Seismic interpretation.
- Expertise: Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly climate action (SDG 13) and affordable clean energy (SDG 7).
Key Project: Funded by the Greater Manchester Climate Emergency initiative, this work supports emissions reduction targets for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, aiming for 50% reduction by 2025 and net-zero by 2038.
Publications: His 2024 thesis explores geothermal and hydrogen storage potential in North West England using subsurface geological modeling.
