David Hess is the Everett E. Berg Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. He holds affiliations with the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) and serves as co-President of the Global Business and Human Rights Scholars Association. His expertise spans corporate accountability, business ethics, and human rights due diligence. Hess earned his PhD (2003), MA (2000) from the University of Pennsylvania, JD (1995) from the University of Iowa, and BA (1992) from Grinnell College.
His research focuses on corporate compliance, anti-corruption strategies, modern slavery in global supply chains, and the intersection of law and business ethics. Notable contributions include the 2024 book Advanced Introduction to Corporate Compliance and advocacy for legislative reforms addressing human trafficking. He is a recipient of the Aspen Institute’s Faculty Pioneer Award.
