About
David Greenhalgh is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, Faculty of Science, where he has been a member since 1986. He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1984 and previously worked at Imperial College London. He is currently the Fourth Year Adviser of Studies and Executive Editor of the Journal of Biological Systems. His work is centered on mathematical and statistical modelling in epidemiology and population dynamics.
Greenhalgh holds a first-class Honours degree in Mathematics and a distinction in Part III Mathematics, both from the University of Cambridge. His educational background laid the foundation for a prolific research career in applied mathematics.
His research interests focus on mathematical and statistical modelling of biological systems, particularly infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, dengue, hepatitis C, and mumps. He employs differential equations, stochastic analysis, and maximum likelihood estimation, often using R software. Application areas include disease transmission among intravenous drug users, vaccination strategies, and the impact of awareness programs. He has extensive international collaborations with researchers in Brazil, India, Oman, Germany, and the Netherlands.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in modelling infectious diseases with public health implications, particularly dengue and HIV, using both deterministic and stochastic frameworks. His work increasingly integrates intervention strategies such as mosquito traps, vaccination protocols, and behavioural awareness, demonstrating a shift toward actionable public health insights.
- Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship (2015–2017) for dengue vaccination modelling
- Best Presentation at Conference Award (2019)
- British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards (2022)
Greenhalgh has supervised or co-supervised nearly twenty research students, seventeen at the PhD level. He has led multiple funded projects, including those supported by the Scottish Funding Council’s Global Challenges Research Fund and Newton Funds. His work has informed health policy through collaborations with Health Protection Scotland and Public Health England, particularly in hepatitis C control and HIV database analysis. He has also collaborated with Wyeth Vaccines and Capita on statistical and modelling applications.
He is a member of the Population Modelling and Epidemiology Research Group and actively participates in professional activities, including keynote speaking and organizing international conferences such as the International Conference on Machine Learning and Computing. He serves on editorial boards and as a journal peer reviewer, contributing significantly to the academic community.
