David M. Gordon is the Roger Howell, Jr. Professor of History at Bowdoin College. His expertise centers on southern and central African history, with a focus on colonialism, environmental cultures, spiritual agency, and humanitarianism. He has authored and edited multiple books, including Invisible Agents: Spirits in a Central African History (2012) and Nachituti’s Gift (2006), which was a Herskovits Award finalist. His current work explores indigenous historiography through oral traditions and art. He teaches courses on African colonial history and the Afro-Portuguese Atlantic World.
