David Gabriel Hebert

Professor David Gabriel Hebert is a tenured full Professor of Music Education at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Bergen, where he leads the Grieg Academy Music Education (GAME) research group and manages the Nordic Network for Music Education. He holds concurrent appointments as Honorary Professor at the Education University of Hong Kong and Affiliated Professor at the University of the Faroe Islands, while serving on the Executive Council of the International Society for Music Education and as Chair-Elect for the Historical Ethnomusicology section of the Society for Ethnomusicology.

Research Focus: His work bridges ethnomusicology, comparative education, and cultural policy, with particular emphasis on transcultural musicianship, non-Western educational philosophies, and digital innovation in music pedagogy. He has led research initiatives across six continents, including the EU's Erasmus+ Music Talks project in Latvia and North Macedonia, and Norad-funded PhD program development in Uganda.

Teaching & Mentorship: Hebert teaches Master's and PhD music education programs in Bergen, delivers the doctoral course 'Non-Western Educational Philosophy and Policy', and has served on supervisory committees for universities in 15 countries. His Sympathetic Resonance Trio explores collaborative performance, while his 20+ books include Comparative and Decolonial Studies in Philosophy of Education (Springer, 2023) and the forthcoming A Philosophy of Music Education for the Era of AI (Routledge, 2024).
