David Fewer

David Fewer serves as a Docent (equivalent to Associate Professor) in the Department of Microbiology and Department of Food and Nutrition at the University of Helsinki. Affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), he leads the Microbial Natural Products research group and supervises doctoral candidates in the Integrative Life Science and Microbiology and Biotechnology programmes. His work addresses global challenges in freshwater safety through environmental microbiology and biotechnology.

His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Göttingen (awarded February 28, 2002), establishing over two decades of research expertise.

Dr. Fewer investigates cyanobacterial bloom dynamics, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, and sustainable applications of natural products. His integrative approach combines field studies of Baltic Sea ecosystems with genomic analysis and biotechnological innovation to convert harmful algal blooms into valuable biomaterials, directly supporting circular bio-economy initiatives. Current research emphasizes UV-absorbing compound sequestration and antibiotic discovery from marine symbionts.
