David Farber

David Farber is the Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Kansas, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. Specializing in modern U.S. history, his research focuses on 20th-century political and social movements, drug policy, conservatism, and Cold War dynamics. Farber holds a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Chicago (1985), alongside earlier degrees from the same institution and the University of Michigan.

His scholarship includes award-winning books such as *The Rise and Fall of Modern American Conservatism* (2010) and *Crack: Rock Cocaine, Street Capitalism, and the Decade of Greed* (2019). He has been a visiting scholar at institutions worldwide, including the University of Tokyo and the Australian National University. Farber’s work frequently engages with public history through documentaries, podcasts, and media interviews.

Notable honors include the Herbert Hoover Prize (2003) and membership in the Society of American Historians. He currently oversees graduate studies but is not accepting new advisees. Farber’s interdisciplinary approach links historical analysis with contemporary debates on race, economics, and governance.
