Professor David Eyers is an academic at the School of Computing, University of Otago, since 2011. His research focuses on distributed systems, cloud computing, security enforcement, and public policy. He previously worked as a postdoc at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory and earned his PhD there.
- Education: PhD from University of Cambridge; undergraduate degrees in Computer Engineering and Pure Maths from UNSW, Australia
David’s research explores event-based middleware, role-based access control, and decentralized information flow control, with applications in electronic health records and cloud security. His recent publications span topics like TCP optimization, AI ethics, and crowdsourced content moderation.
He actively supervises postgraduate students, including award-winning advisees like Pradeesh, who won the 3MT competition (2021) and an Outstanding Paper award at COLING 2022. His work also intersects with green computing, network virtualization, and declarative programming.
David contributes to university governance via roles on the eResearch Advisory Group, IT Governance Board, and Advanced Technology Reference Group, focusing on AI adoption and cybersecurity risk mitigation. He helped establish the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Public Policy (CAIPP).
