David Erbe

David Erbe is a Lecturer in Recreation and Outdoor Education at Western Colorado University, affiliated with the Recreation, Exercise & Sport Science Department. His work focuses on experiential education, outdoor leadership, and sustainability, combining academic teaching with practical outdoor skills.

• Education: MA in College Student Development from Appalachian State University (2016), B.S. in Environmental Science and Technology from University of Maryland (2014)
• Career highlights: Instructed over 500 backcountry days for organizations like Outward Bound, led international expeditions to Norway, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Canada, and Mexico

His research interests include transformative learning experiences in natural environments, outdoor pedagogy, and human development in adventure settings. He teaches courses such as Principles of Outdoor Education, Leadership & Facilitation, Snow-based Education, and Human Development & Counseling for Outdoor Educators.

David is deeply connected to the Gunnison Valley, drawn by its mountain community and outdoor recreation opportunities. He previously worked at Colorado Outward Bound School and Garrett College before joining Western Colorado University.
