David Dempsey is a Professor of Mathematics at Jacksonville State University (JSU), affiliated with the College of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences and the Department of Mathematical, Computing, & Information Sciences. He has taught at JSU since 2000, following in the footsteps of his parents, who were also JSU math faculty. A two-time alumnus of JSU, he holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky (2000), with a dissertation in Algebra and Topology, as well as a BA (1992) and MS (1994) in Mathematics and Music from JSU.
Dr. Dempsey’s teaching spans nearly all undergraduate mathematics courses, including calculus, abstract algebra, and a capstone seminar he designed for math and education students. He actively advises the JSU Math Club and Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) National Mathematics Honor Society, serving as KME’s National President-Elect (2025–2029). Beyond academia, he serves as the staff organist at Jacksonville First United Methodist Church and participates in the Calhoun County Civic Chorale.
His academic leadership roles include serving as Program Chair for Mathematics since 2020. His research and teaching focus on algebraic structures, topology, and innovative approaches to undergraduate mathematics education.
