Dr. David Courey serves as Guest Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at the Evangelical Theological Faculty, Leuven, and Lecturer in Systematic Theology at Continental Theological Seminary, Brussels, positions he has held since 2017. Previously, he was Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Systematic Theology at ETF Leuven (2015-2017) and Dean of Graduate Studies at Continental Theological Seminary (2014-2017), with additional adjunct roles at McMaster Divinity College and Master's College and Seminary.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Christian Theology from McMaster Divinity College (2011), graduate work in Theology at Conrad Grebel College (2004-2016), an M.A. in History from Laurentian University (1997), a Diploma in Theology from Eastern Pentecostal Bible College (1984), and a B.Sc. Honors in Biochemistry from Bishop's University (1979).
Courey's research centers on Pentecostal Theology, particularly the intersection of Pentecostalism with Reformation thought and the theology of the cross. He investigates Pentecostal ecclesiology, soteriology, and contemporary challenges in post-Christian Europe, bridging historical theology with Pentecostal experience through figures like Luther, Edwards, and Anabaptist reformers.
His recent publications (2016-2023) reveal consistent engagement with Pentecostal systematic theology, Reformation history, and European secularism. He has authored a seminal book on Luther and Pentecostal triumphalism, numerous book chapters exploring Pentecostal-dialogues with classical theology, and extensive encyclopedia entries on Reformation figures and Pentecostal leaders, demonstrating a commitment to contextualizing Pentecostal thought within broader theological frameworks.
Dr. Courey is an active member of the European Pentecostal Theological Association, American Academy of Religion, American Society of Church History, and Society for Pentecostal Studies, reflecting his deep engagement with both historical and contemporary theological discourse.
