University of Newcastle Australia (UON)About
David Collings is an Associate Professor in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle. With a PhD from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Sydney, he has established himself as a prominent researcher in plant cell biology.
His research focuses on plant cell structure and development, particularly examining the cytoskeleton organization in plant cells, wood grain formation, cell wall development, and root structure. Dr. Collings frequently employs advanced microscopy techniques including confocal microscopy and X-ray microtomography in his investigations. He has a strong collaborative relationship with David McCurdy and other researchers at the University of Newcastle.
Dr. Collings' research spans multiple plant systems including Arabidopsis thaliana, Pinus radiata (radiata pine), Brassica species, and orchids. His work on phi thickenings, compression wood formation, transfer cells, and plant responses to mechanical and osmotic stress has resulted in over 100 publications. His recent work (2021-2024) shows continued focus on wood grain development, cell wall structure, and molecular mechanisms in plant development.
His publication record demonstrates consistent research productivity with numerous high-impact articles in journals such as Journal of Experimental Botany, Plant Science, and Tree Physiology. His work often combines classical plant anatomy with modern molecular and imaging techniques to address fundamental questions in plant cell biology.
Dr. Collings has also contributed to science education, with publications on teaching cell biology and biochemistry to undergraduate students, including experiences during the Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand.
