David C. Engerman is the Leitner International Interdisciplinary Professor of History at Yale University, focusing on twentieth-century international history. Previously, he spent nineteen years at Brandeis University before joining Yale. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (1998).
His research explores Soviet-American relations, Cold War dynamics, and the geopolitical dimensions of development assistance. Notable works include Modernization from the Other Shore (2003), Know Your Enemy (2009), and The Price of Aid (2018). Engerman has been supported by prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, and others.
His recent work examines international economic inequality during the latter half of the twentieth century. Engerman is currently on leave during Fall 2025 and can be reached via appointment scheduling through his office at 46 Hillhouse Ave, Room 203.
