David Blane

Dr. David Blane is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow's School of Health & Wellbeing, Department of General Practice & Primary Care. He is the Academic Lead for the Deep End GP project in Scotland, focusing on healthcare in socio-economically deprived areas. His research interests include health inequalities, primary care roles in mitigating inequities, and social determinants of health. Blane holds a BSc in International Health (UCL), MBChB (University of Dundee), MRCGP (2010), MPH (University of Glasgow, 2012), and a PhD (University of Glasgow, 2018). He has been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including teaching modules on global primary care systems and social determinants of health. Since 2010, he has contributed to the Deep End project, authoring reports on topics like GP recruitment, climate change impacts, and pandemic responses. His work emphasizes addressing the inverse care law and improving healthcare access for marginalized populations.

Blane’s research uses mixed methods and realist approaches to explore issues such as food insecurity, healthcare access barriers, and primary care’s role in managing chronic conditions. His recent work includes addressing health inequities in diabetes, trauma-informed care, and the impact of austerity on healthcare systems. He is also involved in initiatives like the Deep End GP Pioneer Scheme to enhance GP training in deprived areas.

His publications span over 100 articles, focusing on topics like long-COVID management, weight management interventions, and frailty in younger populations. Key themes include advocating for health equity, improving primary care models, and leveraging healthcare systems to reduce disparities.

Blane serves as the RCGP representative for Obesity Action Scotland and on the RCGP Health Inequalities Standing Group. His work integrates academic research with clinical practice, emphasizing actionable solutions to systemic healthcare challenges.
