David Alonso-Caneiro

Dr. David Alonso-Caneiro is a Senior Lecturer in Engineering (Mechatronics) at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Australia, within the School of Science, Technology and Engineering. He holds honorary academic positions at QUT, UNSW, and the Lions Eye Institute. His research focuses on developing innovative methods for clinical diagnostics, particularly in optometry and ophthalmology, leveraging deep learning, image processing, and medical device innovation.

He earned his PhD from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 2010, with a thesis recognized by the QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award. His career includes roles as a Research Fellow (2011-2022) at QUT's Contact Lens and Visual Optics Laboratory. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has secured significant grants, including studies on choroidal genetics, AI-driven ocular imaging, and myopia-related research.

Teaching areas include MCH302 Robotics and Autonomous Systems and MCH400 Image Processing and Machine Vision. His work has been supported by grants from NHMRC, AVR Research, and the RLC Foundation, totaling over $900,000. Awards include the 2018 Kevin Cahill Innovation Award and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research emphasizes clinical translation, with applications in optical coherence tomography (OCT), retinal imaging, and disease diagnostics.
