University of Illinois Urbana-ChampaignAbout
David A. Kristovich is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois's Department of Climate, Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences within the School of Earth, Society & Environment. He also serves as Head of the Climate and Atmospheric Sciences Section at the Illinois State Water Survey and an Affiliate of the Center for Atmospheric Sciences.
His research focuses on boundary layer meteorology, mesoscale processes, and cloud/precipitation microphysics with a particular emphasis on Great Lakes weather systems. Key areas include lake-effect snowstorms, stable boundary layer dynamics, urban meteorology, and remote sensing applications. He has led major field campaigns like SAVANT and OWLeS to study atmospheric interactions with complex terrain and water bodies.
Recent work emphasizes turbulence generation in stable boundary layers, topographical influences on weather patterns, and collaborative numerical modeling efforts. Over 30 years of academic contributions include over 60 peer-reviewed publications and active editorial roles in Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology (2012-2022).
Students in his research group engage in field data collection using aircraft, radars, and lidar systems, participating in both domestic and international field experiments. Research outcomes are disseminated through high-impact journals and presentations at major scientific conferences.
Current initiatives include studying meteotsunamis in the Great Lakes, urban heat island effects on lake breezes, and improving climate model simulations of lake-atmosphere interactions. His work bridges observational studies with advanced modeling to enhance understanding of mesoscale weather systems and their societal impacts.
