About
David A Fowle is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Geology at the University of Kansas, where he has been affiliated since 2006. His research explores the interplay between microorganisms and geochemical processes, with applications to the rock record, environmental remediation, and mineral exploration.
Research Interests: Dr. Fowle specializes in biogeochemistry and geomicrobiology, focusing on microbial influences on iron cycling, methanogenesis, and dolomite formation. His work bridges experimental and field studies to understand ancient environmental conditions and modern biogeochemical dynamics.
Selected Publications: Recent work examines microbial community shifts in ferruginous sediments, oxidative cycling under early atmospheres, sulfate concentrations in Archean oceans, and green rust formation in water columns. The 2017-2008 publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to geobiology and geochemical modeling.
Scientific Awards: Dr. Fowle has received the Docking Faculty Scholar award, served as Dean's Professor (2014-2016), and been recognized by the Kavli Foundation. He also earned the Young Scientist Award from the Mineralogical Association of Canada.
