Professor Dave Holmes holds the University Research Chair in Forensic Nursing at the University of Ottawa's School of Nursing, within the Faculty of Health Sciences. He completed his B.Sc. (1991, University of Ottawa), M.Sc. (1998, University of Montreal), and Ph.D. (2002, University of Montreal) in Nursing, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Health Care, Technology, and Place at the University of Toronto (2003). His research focuses on critical theory, psychiatric nursing in correctional settings, public health, and the application of poststructuralist thought, particularly Deleuze and Guattari, and Foucault.
With over 220 peer-reviewed articles and 57 book chapters, Holmes is co-editor of seminal works like Critical Interventions in the Ethics of Health Care (2009) and Radical Sex Between Men: Assembling Desiring-Machines (2017). He has secured over $13.5M in research funding from CIHR and SSHRC, addressing topics like risk management, psychiatric care, and digital-age sexual health.
His awards include Fellowships from the American and Canadian Academies of Nursing and recognition as one of the top 2% most cited researchers globally (2020). Holmes has been a visiting professor in Australia, Canada, the U.S., Indonesia, Luxembourg, and the U.K. He currently serves as Founding Editor-in-Chief of APORIA – The Nursing Journal and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Parrhèsia.
