About
Dave Bollivar serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Biology department at Indiana University-Bloomington, actively contributing to the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. His primary teaching role involves designing and instructing undergraduate bioinformatics laboratory courses focused on phage genomics.
His research interests center on computational approaches to microbial genomics, specifically utilizing Microbacterium foliorum and Mycobacterium smegmatis as model hosts for phage discovery and annotation. This work integrates evolutionary biology with hands-on genomic analysis techniques for freshman students.
Bollivar has consistently taught multiple SEA-PHAGES sections including Bio 102 lab (Spring 2021, 7 students), General Biology Laboratory 6 (Spring 2019, 13 students), and SEA lab (Spring 2017, 14 students). Each course met weekly for 1-3 hours, providing freshmen with foundational experience in phage genome analysis through the program's standardized bioinformatics pipeline.
As part of the broader SEA community, he participates in national workshops and symposia supporting the program's mission to advance genomic education through undergraduate research experiences.
