Darren Weir is a Senior Lecturer in Law and Director of Lawyering Skills at Kent Law School, University of Kent. Previously a practicing barrister specializing in criminal and regulatory law, he transitioned to academia in 2010, initially as a part-time associate lecturer. He now teaches evidence law, policing, and advocacy modules, and oversees co-curricular programs like mooting and mock trials. His research focuses on aligning legal education with evolving professional demands while upholding critical legal scholarship.
Before academia, Weir prosecuted and defended high-profile cases, including seminal rulings on hate crime and sexual offenses. He served as an Independent Legal Advisor to the CPS Hate Crime Scrutiny Panel and contributed to drafting local legal protocols. He also led a business turnaround for a Victorian theater, transforming it into a profitable venture. Additional roles include external examiner for Staffordshire University’s Policing degree and script advisor for TV legal dramas.
His professional accolades include a 2024 finalist placement in the OUP National Law Teacher of the Year Competition. He holds a PGCHE (2020) and is training to supervise pupil barristers in advocacy.
