Daria Dayter is an Associate Professor of English Linguistics at Tampere University, Finland, within the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and the Language Studies department. She specializes in discourse analysis, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics with a focus on digital communication, forensic linguistics, and the intersection of language and power. Previously, she held positions at the University of Basel (Switzerland) and the University of Bayreuth (Germany), where she earned her PhD (2014) and habilitation (2021).
Her research explores digital discourse in social media and online environments, including studies on pick-up artists’ language, persuasive communication in the attention economy, and forensic linguistic analysis of police interviews. She co-founded the research groups OSSO (Online Selves - Self Online) and copRe (Communicative Practices on Reddit) and directs the PLURAL research center at Tampere University.
Her work combines corpus linguistics with qualitative methods, notably analyzing large datasets from platforms like Twitter and Reddit. Key themes include pragmatic variation online, self-praise in digital contexts, and the ethical dimensions of researching controversial communities.
