Daphne Blumberg
Associate Professor · Developmental Biology
University of Maryland, Baltimore CountyAbout
Dr. Daphne Blumberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Her research focuses on developmental gene expression and tissue morphogenesis using the model organism Dictyostelium discoideum. She completed her Ph.D. at Tufts University School of Medicine and a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT.
Her three main research projects investigate: 1) the role of anti-adhesive proteins in cell migration and cell fate proportioning; 2) negative regulation of gene expression in prespore cells through mRNA degradation or transcriptional repression; and 3) cell type-specific regulation of ribosomal protein genes and their link to programmed cell death. Techniques employed include molecular genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry.
Dr. Blumberg teaches courses in Cell Biology (BIOL 303), Developmental Biology (BIOL 442), and Advanced Topics in Developmental Biology (BIOL 443). Her lab is located in the Biological Sciences Building (BS 462), and she can be reached at blumberg@umbc.edu.
