About
Dr. Danny Longman is a Senior Lecturer in Human Evolutionary Physiology at Loughborough University. He holds a BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences, an MPhil, and a PhD in Human Evolution from the University of Cambridge (2005–2014). Previously a Post-Doctoral researcher at Cambridge, he joined Loughborough in 2019 and advanced to Senior Lecturer in 2024. His research focuses on the intersection of human evolution, physiology, and extreme physical performance, particularly in ultra-endurance sports and thermal adaptation.
Research interests include thermoregulatory adaptation, brainwave patterns in athletes, energy allocation strategies, and evolutionary perspectives on human morphology. His work explores how endurance sports serve as models to understand ancient human adaptations to environmental stressors. Recent studies analyze metabolic responses in transatlantic rowers, cognitive-physical performance trade-offs, and the role of energy scarcity in evolutionary contexts.
Publications from 2021–2025 highlight trends in energy metabolism, thermal physiology, and evolutionary biology. Notable topics include the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and metabolic rates, the impact of nature exposure on fatigue, and the interplay between energetic stress and spatial cognition. Danny’s research also addresses applied health outcomes, such as lifestyle interventions for truck drivers and health benefits of urban vs. natural environments.
He is actively involved in conferences and interdisciplinary collaborations, publishing in journals spanning physiology, sports science, and evolutionary biology. His work bridges fundamental research and practical applications in athlete performance optimization and public health.
