Danny Gottlieb is a renowned jazz and contemporary drummer, currently serving as Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida. He gained prominence as the original drummer of the Pat Metheny Group and has collaborated with legendary artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Sting, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock. With over 300 CDs to his credit, including four Grammy Award-winning projects, Gottlieb has also authored educational materials like The Evolution of Jazz Drumming and co-authored works with Joe Morello and Michael Green.
His research interests focus on jazz drumming pedagogy, big band swing interpretation, and the role of rhythm in contemporary improvisation. His educational publications emphasize practical mastery of feel, tempo, and sight-reading for big band contexts.
Since 2004, Gottlieb has been a member of Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band, performing benefit concerts for military organizations worldwide. He resides in Nashville, Tennessee.
