Danielle Griffiths

Dr. Danielle Griffiths is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Liverpool, part of the School of Law and Social Justice within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD, MA, and BSci (Hons) in Law. Previously, she held lectureships at the University of Sussex (2016-2021) and the University of Manchester (2014-2016), alongside Research Fellow roles in ethics-focused centers. Her expertise spans healthcare law, criminal law, family law, and feminist/gender theory. She directs the Health Law and Regulation Unit, focusing on interdisciplinary research in healthcare accountability and legal-ethical challenges in medicine.

Her research addresses intersections of law with medical advancements (e.g., surrogacy, mitochondrial replacement therapy) and medical negligence prosecution. Notable collaborations include work with the Crown Prosecution Service, General Medical Council, and National Police Chiefs Council. She has secured ESRC and AHRC funding, including a £150,000 project on healthcare ethics and a £55,000 initiative on reproductive medicine and family law.

Teaching includes modules on Criminal Law (Levels 4-6), Medical Law and Ethics, and Family Law. She co-leads the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership’s Socio-Legal Studies Pathway. Professional roles include editorial board membership at Medical Law International and guest chief editor for Law, Innovation and Technology.

Her work has influenced policy reforms, such as surrogacy law recommendations by the Law Commission and procedural changes in medical manslaughter cases. Awards include Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2019).
