About
Daniell L. Mattern is a Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Mississippi, where he has served since 1980. He holds the Margaret McLean Coulter Professorship (2015–2019) and the Andrew Stefani and Eldon Miller Chair for Excellence in Teaching (2021–2024). His research focuses on organic chemistry, biochar functionalization for environmental applications, molecular rectifiers, and G-quadruplex DNA stabilization. He has been recognized for his teaching with multiple awards, including the Elsie M. Hood Outstanding Teaching Award.
Education:
- B.A. Chemistry, Kalamazoo College (1970)
- M.S. Chemistry, Stanford University (1971)
- Ph.D. Chemistry, Stanford University (1975)
- Postdoctoral Fellowships: Tufts University School of Medicine, University of California, San Diego
Research Interests: Dr. Mattern’s work spans polyiodination of aromatic compounds, magnetic surfactant synthesis, glyoxime derivatives for metal circuitry, and perylenebisimide-based molecular rectifiers. His recent studies explore biochar’s role in CO2 capture and heavy metal adsorption via acoustic treatments. His research is supported by NSF, NIH, and the American Chemical Society.
Publications: His work bridges organic chemistry and environmental science, with recent themes in biochar functionalization and nanomaterials. Key areas include CO2 capture mechanisms, heavy metal remediation, and molecular electronics.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of multiple teaching awards and grants from NSF, NIH, and Research Corporation. His contributions to organic chemistry education and research span over four decades.
Teaching & Service: Teaches undergraduate and graduate organic chemistry courses. Engaged in academic service, including leadership roles at the University of Mississippi. Enjoys cello performance and improv comedy in his spare time.
