About
Daniel Whiting is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Philosophy. He is actively engaged in research on epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of language, and the history of philosophy, with a central focus on normativity. He currently holds an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Fellowship for his project Sympathy in Harmony: Margaret Cavendish's Philosophy of Value.
His research spans both historical and contemporary philosophical issues. Major themes include normative reasons, higher-order evidence, aesthetic obligations, and the philosophy of Margaret Cavendish. He has led significant AHRC-funded projects such as Higher-Order Evidence in Epistemology, Ethics, and Aesthetics (2019–2021) and Normativity: Epistemic and Practical (2013–2015), and previously co-led the 'Aims and Norms' workshop series funded by the British Academy.
His recent publications reflect a growing focus on Margaret Cavendish, exploring her contributions to ethics, aesthetics, and metaphysics, while also contributing to core debates in analytic philosophy. Articles span topics such as semantic normativity, aesthetic reasons, and the epistemology of higher-order evidence, published in journals like Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, The British Journal of Aesthetics, and European Journal of Philosophy.
