About
Daniel Thompson is a Professor of Physics at Swansea University, holding a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. He previously served as a part-time Research Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His research focuses on dualities in String Theory, addressing three core questions: the scope of dualities, their application to physical phenomena, and the mathematical language describing them. Major contributions include work on Exceptional Field Theory, string dualities, and integrable systems.
Thompson obtained his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics from Imperial College London (2002), a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics from Cambridge University (2003), a master's in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Physics from Imperial College (2006), and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Queen Mary, University of London (2010).
His published work predominantly explores mathematical physics foundations, with recent articles focusing on Chern-Simons theory, twistor space models, and Poisson-Lie dualities. These publications consistently integrate concepts from quantum gravity, string theory, and geometric algebra.
- FWO Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011, renewed 2014)
- Royal Society University Research Fellowship (2017)
Thompson supervises postgraduate students and coordinates research in dualities and geometry at Swansea's Particle Physics Theory and Cosmology group.
