Daniel Rittschof is the Norman L. Christensen Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sciences at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, with a joint appointment in the Department of Biology at Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He is also an Affiliate of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society and holds the title of Bass Fellow. His research focuses on marine ecology, biofouling mechanisms, barnacle adhesion, environmental toxicology, and the impacts of plastic pollution. Rittschof earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan.
Research Interests:
- Chemical and behavioral ecology of marine organisms, particularly barnacles and blue crabs
- Development of non-toxic antifouling strategies using biomaterials
- Effects of xenobiotics and microplastics on marine life
- Ecological roles of biofilms and microbial communities
- Marine conservation and sustainable technologies
