Daniel Michael Youd is a Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures (Chinese) and Associate Dean at Beloit College. He holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Princeton University. His research focuses on Ming and Qing dynasty vernacular fiction, science fiction, utopian literature, drama, and intellectual history, with recent engagement in Digital Humanities (DH) methodologies. He teaches Chinese language courses and advanced literary studies, integrating computational tools for textual analysis. Currently, he is translating the 18th-century novel Lüye xianzong.
His recent publication in History Retold: Premodern Chinese Texts in Western Translation (2022) examines the 17th-century Chinese text’s French translation. Beyond academia, he serves on the boards of the Beloit-Janesville Symphony and Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company, and practices beekeeping and jam-making.
