Daniel M Brinks

Daniel M. Brinks is a Professor of Government and Law at the University of Texas at Austin, where he serves as Chair of the Government Department and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts. He is also a Senior Researcher & Global Scholar at the Centre on Law and Social Transformation (University of Bergen and Christian Michelsen Institute, Norway). His academic credentials include a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and a J.D. from the University of Michigan.

His research spans Comparative Politics and Public Law, with a regional focus on Latin America. Key interests include constitutional justice, judicial institutions, human rights enforcement (especially socio-economic rights), rule of law, institutional weakness, and democratization. His work examines how courts and legal frameworks advance democratic rights and address inequality.

Recent publications (2020–2025) explore judicialization backlash, constitutional design, human rights to water/sanitation, private regulatory initiatives, and institutional weakness in Latin America. These reflect a consistent focus on the intersection of law, power, and social change, emphasizing empirical and comparative analysis of legal systems.

He leads collaborative projects including an NSF-funded initiative studying global legal institutions (with Jeff Staton and Rachel Cichowski) and a Ford Foundation-funded analysis of human rights in supply chain capitalism. He coordinates research teams at the Centre on Law and Social Transformation on rights realization frameworks.
