Daniel Luther

Dr. Daniel Luther is a Teaching Fellow in Gender, Film, and Media at the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a Visiting Research Associate at Queer@King’s, King’s College London. His research focuses on South Asian public culture, queer methodologies, and post-colonial decolonial frameworks in film, literature, and media. He co-founded the international platform 'Queer’ Asia' and co-edited the book 'Queer’ Asia: Decolonising and Reimagining Sexuality and Gender (Zed Books, 2019).

Luther holds a PhD from SOAS University of London, a Master of Arts in Literary Studies from the National University of Singapore, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Delhi, India. He has taught at the University of Warwick’s Department of Sociology and curated the Queer’ Asia Film Festival since its inception. His work critiques heteronormative canonicity and explores intersections of queer theory with global south narratives. His recent publications include analyses of Rabindranath Tagore’s texts and Bollywood’s cultural legibility of male same-sex sexuality.

Notable Works: His 2021 article 'Queer Curatorial Praxis' theorizes failures in queer film curation as anti-racist praxis. His 2021 paper on Karan Johar examines neoliberal co-optation of queer identities in Bollywood. He also critiques 'Mother India' and 'India’s Daughter' through patriarchal discourse frameworks.
