About
Daniel Kaplan is the DeWitt Wallace Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at Macalester College, applying mathematical techniques including statistics and computation to physiological and medical sciences.
His educational background:
- BA in Physics from Swarthmore College (1981)
- MA in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University (1982)
- PhD in Biomedical Physics from Harvard University (1989)
Research spans mathematical physiology, nonlinear dynamics (chaos theory) applied to biology/medicine, scientific computation, and statistical modeling, with contributions to public health through epidemiology teaching in Macalester's public health concentration.
He received Macalester’s 2006 Excellence in Teaching Award for creating an integrated calculus-statistics curriculum that gained national recognition and attracted funding from the National Science Foundation, Keck Foundation, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Professor Kaplan authored textbooks in nonlinear dynamics (applied to biology/medicine), scientific computation, and statistical modeling, and maintains an office in Olin-Rice Science Center room 231.
