About
Professor Daniel J. Rosbottom (born 1969) holds the Chair of Interiors Buildings Cities at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology. He succeeded Professor Emeritus Tony Fretton in this position, bringing a distinctive British perspective to the chair. Rosbottom advocates for teaching through projects that create a symbiotic relationship between practice and education, having previously served as Head of the School of Architecture and Landscape at Kingston University in London.
His research focuses on understanding architecture as both a social and material discourse, with particular emphasis on how interior architecture and urban architecture form interconnected systems of spatial order. Rosbottom challenges modernity's obsession with visual aspects by promoting more bodily understandings of architectural space. His work explores the relationship between interiors, buildings, and cities as integrated components rather than separate entities.
The recent publications and media coverage highlight Rosbottom's focus on civic architecture, cultural institutions, and urban regeneration projects. His work demonstrates a consistent interest in how architectural interventions can transform public spaces and community infrastructure, particularly through projects like the Sidcup Storyteller library and cinema, and the Bodø Concert Hall and Library in Norway.
Awarded for his significant contributions to architecture:
- Architects Journal Award for Civic Building of the Year (2024) for Sidcup Storyteller
- Architecture Today Award, International Category (2024) for Bodø Concert Hall and Library
- London Public Building of the Year 2024 LABC Award for Sidcup Storyteller
- Weimar National Theatre Competition Winner (2024)
- RIBA International Award (2024) for Pico Adega
Rosbottom maintains a strong connection between academic work and professional practice through DRDH Architects, the firm he co-founded with David Howarth in 2000. His leadership at TU Delft continues the international focus of the chair, with particular emphasis on creating meaningful architectural interventions that respond to urban contexts while respecting social dimensions of space.
