Professor Daniel J. Edquist-Whelan serves as the Charles Prentiss Hough Odyssey Professor of Politics and Chair of the Department of Politics at Hendrix College. He holds a Ph.D. from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, an M.A. from the School of International Service at American University, and a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His research focuses on international human rights, political theory, and global governance. He co-authored the widely recognized textbook International Human Rights (6th ed., Routledge, 2020) with Jack Donnelly, examining the political dimensions of human rights frameworks. His work explores themes like the Right to Development, regional human rights systems, and the historical evolution of human rights norms.
Edquist-Whelan’s publications span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews, addressing topics such as humanitarian intervention, the interplay between human rights and development, and the legal philosophy of human dignity. His contributions highlight theoretical debates and practical implications of human rights in global and comparative contexts.
As a faculty member, he contributes to the Politics Department’s mission of fostering critical thinking and engagement with interdisciplinary issues. His academic leadership includes curricular development and mentoring students in political science research.
