Daniel Hörcher is an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London’s Transport Strategy Centre (TSC), part of the Centre for Transport Engineering and Modelling (CTEM), and holds dual senior roles as a Senior Research Fellow at Corvinus University of Budapest and Research Associate at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. His research focuses on three core themes: transport service provision in spatial equilibrium, public transport economics, and large-scale transport data analysis.
Education: BSc in Transport Engineering from Budapest University of Technology and Economics (supervisor: Prof. Katalin Tánczos), MSc in Spatial, Transport & Environmental Economics from VU University Amsterdam (supervisor: Prof. Piet Rietveld), and PhD in Transport Economics from Imperial College London (2014–2017, supervised by Prof. Dan Graham).
Research Interests:
- Quantifying economic impacts of transport infrastructure using spatial models
- Optimal pricing/tariff structures for public transport under equity & political constraints
- Causal inference methods for evaluating transport interventions using big data
Editorial Roles: Editor of the 2023 Handbook on Transport Pricing and Financing (Edward Elgar) and Associate Editor of the Journal of Transport Economics and Policy. Active in the International Transportation Economics Association (Executive/Scientific Committees since 2022).
Policy Work: Advised UK, Australian, and Hungarian transport authorities on pricing/appraisal policies. Contributed to OECD and International Growth Centre policy reports.
Teaching: Lecturer for the undergraduate course Transport Demand and Economics (CIVE97017), assistant supervisor for PhD candidates Tobie Cusson and Surabhi Ojha, and mentor to MSc/undergraduate students.
