Daniel H. Weiss is the Homewood Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University and President Emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2015–2023). He previously served as president of Haverford College and Lafayette College, and as Dean of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins. He holds a PhD in Western Medieval and Byzantine Art from Johns Hopkins and an MBA from Yale School of Management.
His research focuses on medieval pilgrimage, Crusader art, Byzantine studies, and Gothic/Romanesque architecture. He has authored seven books, including Why the Museum Matters (2022), In That Time: Michael O’Donnell and the Tragic Era of Vietnam (2019), and Remaking College: Innovation and the Liberal Arts (2013). His work bridges art history with leadership in museums and higher education.
- Awards: Van Courtlandt Elliott Award (2018), Business and Society Award (Yale SOM), three honorary degrees, and fellowships from Harvard, Mellon Foundation, and NEH.
- Leadership Roles: Vice Chair of Samuel H. Kress Foundation, Library of America, and trustee of Wallace and Posse Foundations. Member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Council on Foreign Relations.
Weiss teaches courses on museums, nonprofit leadership, and medieval art at Johns Hopkins. His career spans academia, museum leadership, and strategic consulting at Booz Allen Hamilton.
