He holds adjunct affiliations with the University of Waterloo and has been a Senior Scientist at Quantum Benchmark Inc. since 2017. Previously, he served as Research Faculty at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (2002–2021) and held postdoctoral roles at Los Alamos National Lab, Microsoft Research, and UC Berkeley. His research focuses on quantum computation, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computation, and quantum cryptography.
Education: PhD in Physics from Caltech (1997), advised by John Preskill. Earlier, he was Elected Junior Phi Beta Kappa at Harvard University (1991) and a National Merit Scholar (1987).
Research interests emphasize foundational quantum technologies, including stabilizer codes and quantum teleportation-based gates. His work has advanced practical implementations of quantum computing through error mitigation strategies. Recent contributions include innovations in hypergraph product codes.
- Awards:
- Fellow of the American Physical Society (2013)
- CIFAR Senior Fellow in Quantum Information (2008)
- TR100 Innovator (MIT Technology Review, 2003)
Advising: Currently prioritizes PhD students from Perimeter Institute's PSI program. His work interfaces with industry via Quantum Benchmark Inc. and academic collaborations.
