University of HamburgAbout
Prof. Daniel Fliege holds the Junior Professorship for French and Italian Literature at the University of Hamburg, Faculty of Humanities. His academic career includes studies in Romance Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (2011–2014), an Erasmus semester at Università degli Studi La Sapienza Rom (2013–2014), and advanced research at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS Ulm) and Université la Sorbonne Paris IV (2014–2016). He completed his PhD in Cotutelle between Sorbonne Université and the University of Hamburg (2016–2019) and served as a research fellow at Humboldt University Berlin (2019–2023) before accepting his current position.
His research focuses on French and Italian literature from the 16th–17th centuries, particularly sacred poetry by figures like Marguerite de Navarre, Vittoria Colonna, and Michelangelo Buonarroti. He examines intersections between religious discourses and literary traditions, studying Petrarchism’s spiritual dimensions and post-Tridentine hagiography. In contemporary Francophone literature, he explores AIDS literature (e.g., Hervé Guibert), autofiction, (auto)pornography, and queer theory applied to body and sexuality representations.
He co-organizes the 2024 conference 'Anatomy de l'âme' and studies intermedial relationships between photography, handwriting, and bodily traces in modern art. His work also addresses intersectionality, especially gender and queer studies in early modern contexts.
Fliege has secured significant grants, including funding from the Geschwister Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation (2021) and French research institutions (2019). He is affiliated with the Romanist Association, Italianist Association, and La Société Marguerite de Navarre. His advising and grants narrative reflects sustained engagement with critical editions, conferences, and interdisciplinary projects like the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts'.
He collaborates on lab initiatives such as the Mobile Lab and Data Linking Lab within the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC), contributing to digital preservation and intercultural research in written heritage.
