Dr. Daniel Binns is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Media & Communication at RMIT University. His work bridges theory and practice, focusing on creative technologies' impact on storytelling and media cultures. He has published widely on topics such as Netflix documentaries, drones in filmmaking, and the evolution of media genres like the war film and superhero media. His monographs include The Hollywood War Film (2017) and Material Media-Making in the Digital Age (2021).
Binns has a creative practice background in screenwriting, directing, and producing for networks like Seven Network and National Geographic, with work featured in over 20 international festivals. He teaches in RMIT’s Bachelor of Communication (Media) program, emphasizing cross-media production and media philosophy. He previously led the eco_media symposium (2019–2022), resulting in journal articles and an upcoming edited collection The Climate Catastrophe: A Critical and Creative Survival Guide (2025).
His research interests span AI and creativity, screen cultures, media philosophy, and transmedia storytelling. He supervises PhD and Master’s projects on genre cinema, media technologies, and creative practice research.
