Dr. Dana Moss is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame and a Faculty Fellow at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. She specializes in social movements, transnational sociology, and political sociology with a focus on diaspora communities and authoritarian regimes. Her award-winning book, The Arab Spring Abroad: Diaspora Activism Against Authoritarian Regimes (2022), examines anti-regime mobilization among Syrian, Libyan, and Yemeni diasporas. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Irvine (2016).
Education: PhD in Sociology (UC Irvine, 2016); MA in Sociology (UC Irvine, 2012); MA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies (Villanova, 2009); BA in Sociology and Creative Writing (Loyola University Maryland, 2004, summa cum laude).
Research Interests: Collective resistance to repression, transnational repression, diaspora activism, Middle East politics, qualitative methods. Recent work includes a book project on military rebellion during wartime and a co-authored volume on transnational repression (Transnational Repression in the Age of Globalisation, 2024).
Awards: Charles Tilly Book Award (2022), NSF grants (2023, 2014), and teaching excellence awards. Her work has been featured in American Sociological Review, Social Forces, and policy outlets like Foreign Policy and BBC World Service.
Teaching: Courses include International Migration and Human Rights, Rebellion Against Authority, and Social Movements for Health and Disability Justice. She has advised over 15 graduate and undergraduate students.
Service: Elected roles in ASA sections, editorial work for journals like Mobilization, and consulting for NGOs like Mercy Corps. She co-founded the Yemen Peace Project (2010–2019).
