About
Professor Dan Vimont is a leading climate scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, holding the Ned P. Smith Distinguished Chair of Climatology. He is affiliated with the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department and serves as Director of the Nelson Institute Center for Climatic Research and Co-Director of the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI). His work integrates observational analyses, modeling, and theoretical studies to explore climate variability (e.g., El Niño), climate change mechanisms, and regional impacts, particularly in Wisconsin.
Research interests include tropical climate dynamics, interactions between weather and climate systems, and the societal implications of climate change. Key focus areas are:
- Mechanisms of ENSO variability and its global impacts
- Climate change effects on energy demand and infrastructure
- Aerosol impacts on ocean-atmosphere interactions
- Mid-latitude climate variability and its tropical links
He leads the VIMONT CLIMATE RESEARCH GROUP, advancing understanding of climate predictability and developing tools for climate adaptation. His interdisciplinary approach addresses climate resilience through collaborations with policymakers and stakeholders.
