About
Professor Dan Palermo serves as Deputy Provost Markham and Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at York University's Lassonde School of Engineering. Previously, he held faculty positions at the University of Ottawa (2005-2013) and University of Calgary (2004). As Interim Deputy Provost Markham, he provides academic and administrative leadership for the Markham Campus.
His research focuses on critical structural engineering challenges including seismic repair/retrofit of concrete structures, shape memory alloy applications, innovative masonry systems, advanced cementitious composites (UHP-FRC/ECC), nonlinear finite element analysis, and tsunami-induced structural loading. Work emphasizes infrastructure resilience under extreme events through experimental and computational methods.
Recent publications (2020-2023) reveal concentrated expertise in seismic retrofitting using advanced materials, with significant contributions in shape memory alloy applications for shear walls, masonry wall performance testing, and ultra-high-performance concrete behavior characterization.
Scientific recognition includes:
- York University President’s University-Wide Teaching Award (2018)
- Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (2018)
